THE philosopher JL Mackie once wrote a book called The Miracle of Theism. How can people believe in God, he asked, when there are no sound arguments for his existence and a million reasons for thinking the world is the kind of mess that no god would have created. Even if there are no other miracles, he concluded, at least there is this one — the inexplicable fact of religious belief.
